Storage

The HPC PERUN storage system represents a high-performance and scalable data infrastructure designed for the processing, storage, and long-term archiving of scientific data. It is built to support the entire data lifecycle from real-time computation to the secure preservation of research results.

    The storage architecture consists of three functional tiers, each complementing the others based on the nature and requirements of user workloads:

    1. Scratch storage

    A high-speed working area intended for temporary data generated during active computations.

    • Configuration: 1× SMU server HPE E2000, 1× MDU HPE E2000, 6× SSU-F HPE E2000 (2U32)
    • Technologies: Lustre, gridRAID
    • Capacity: ~730 TB (excluding gridRAID redundancy)
    • Connectivity: 400 Gbit InfiniBand

    This tier is optimized for maximum throughput and parallel access, enabling efficient processing of large-scale computational workloads.

    2. Performance Tier

    A high-performance disk storage array designed for application workloads of the PERUN supercomputer, system management, and related production services. The solution is engineered to deliver high throughput, low latency, and reliable performance for database, application, and control components of the infrastructure.

    • Configuration: 2× NetApp AFF C60
    • Capacity: 189 TB (excluding RAID)
    • RAID Level: RAID-DP
    • Connectivity: 8× 100 Gbit

    The combination of NetApp AFF A90 and FAS 70 systems, with data protection provided by RAID-DP and RAID-TEC, ensures high availability and resilience against failures. High-speed interconnects enable efficient parallel servicing of multiple application workloads without performance bottlenecks.

    3. Capacity-oriented user and archival tier

    A storage system designed for secure and reliable data retention, intended for storing computation results, backups, and large-scale datasets with long-term value. This tier serves as a central data repository with a strong emphasis on data integrity, protection, and high availability even in the event of individual component failures, while being engineered to deliver stable and consistent performance at large data volumes.

    • Configuration: 6× NetApp AFF A90, 1× NetApp FAS 70
    • Capacity: approximately 5 PB
    • RAID Levels: RAID-DP, RAID-TEC
    • Connectivity: 14× 4× 200 Gbit

    In addition to long-term archiving and data protection, the system also provides space for users’ day-to-day work, focusing on fast response times and high reliability when processing active data. This operational tier is optimized for frequent data access, low latency, and high throughput, which are essential for interactive user operations, development and testing tasks, as well as data processing in active projects.

    Thanks to this multi-tiered architecture, the HPC PERUN storage system delivers exceptional performance, flexibility, and security, supporting users throughout all stages of the computational process from data creation to final archiving.
